When we hear about the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, we usually associate them with breast cancer in women. However, men who carry pathogenic variants in these genes face a significantly increased risk of several types of cancer, including prostate cancer, pancreatic cancer and the rarer male breast cancer. Although these risks have been underestimated for years, new guidelines are changing the landscape by recommending genetic testing and personalised prevention strategies for men as well.
BRCA: More Than a “Breast Cancer Gene”
Variants in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes can affect the body’s ability to repair DNA damage, increasing the risk of developing several types of cancer. According to recent studies:
- Men with a pathogenic BRCA2 variant may face an up to 60% increased risk of developing prostate cancer.
- The risk of pancreatic cancer may be up to 7.8 times higher in carriers of BRCA1 or BRCA2 variants.
- Although male breast cancer is rare, the risk among men who carry a BRCA2 variant may rise to as much as 7%.
BRCA Genetic Testing: Why Does It Matter for Men Too?
Despite growing awareness, only 10% of men who meet the criteria for genetic testing undergo testing, compared with 90% of women. Even when men are aware that they may carry such a variant, they often pursue testing for the sake of their daughters, overlooking what the result may mean for their own health.
Experts emphasise that understanding your family history of cancer and discussing the possibility of genetic testing with a doctor can be life-saving.
